How did you get into building fences?
The first fence was built to allow us to put livestock on our own property. We fenced off about ten acres with barbed wire so we could put cows out on our pasture. With sections in between to allow us to do rotational grazing. I later added a couple strands of electric fence to keep our sheep in and the coyotes out. Somewhere between there I also installed an invisible fence to help keep a couple of wandering dogs from introducing us to the neighbors on less than favorable terms!
How old were you, and where were you?
I would have been around 36 when we fenced off our property.
Why do you do it?
I started out of necessity. I ended up enjoying it. I have always enjoyed making things with my hands.
How long do most projects take?
It's hard to set an exact timeline. Factors such as how hard the holes are to dig, avoiding underground utilities, and weather delays all influence it. But 100 foot of privacy fence with a gate or two should be feasible in about two days.
Why call it "Seek First"?
Honestly I was at a low point at a job that I've worked at for over 16 years. I had gotten to where I couldn't hardly stand to be there anymore. One day I was begging God for something to change and I heard that small voice in my head say "seek first". Words that my wife had brought up a couple years earlier. She had thought at that time that I should start a fence business with that name. I brushed it off thinking I didn't have any interest in building fences for a living. Fencing is hard work! So I forgot all about it and so did she. But I knew what I heard and I had a sense of peace about it. So I came home and told my wife. She thought it was a great idea and asked where I got the name. She completely forgot that the name was originally her idea. All that to say, God was telling me to seek Him first and he would take care of the rest. Matthew 6:33
